All love is expansion, all selfishness is contraction
“All love is expansion,
all selfishness is contraction.” This meaningful quote is given by one of the
greatest personalities and monks of India “Swami Vivekanand”, previously known
as “Narendranath Dutta”, was born in Calcutta on 12th January 1863.Ramkrishna Paramahamsa,
who was a priest and the Guru of Swami Ji, taught him the greatest lesson of
life that “By serving mankind, one can serve God.” This is when the journey to
a wonderful divine experience began.
Swami Ji was the first Indian monk who went to America to participate in the parliament of world religions held at Chicago in 1893 where he gave a magnificent lecture. In that lecture, he explained the concept of God being one.
He says “All love is expansion, all selfishness is contraction. Love is therefore the only law of life. He who loves lives, he who is selfish is dying. Therefore love for love’s sake, because it is the law of life, just as you breathe to live.” This famous quote teaches us that the foundation of human beings is all depended on love and end of everything starts with being selfish. This can be proven by just observing natural stuffs around us. Trees grow fruits for us, they give oxygen for us and they give pleasing shelter for us. They don’t eat their fruits themselves. They don’t use their single thing for themselves. Have we ever thought why do they do so? It is only because they are natural things and nature has never been selfish since the earth came into existence.
To be truly wealthy is to have a fulfilled heart, and that means to love and to be loved. This can only be possible if we love selflessly. “All love is expansion” is said in this context. Just think what a mother does? Why is she worshiped like Goddess? Why is her heart so pure? What special thing does she do? The answer to all these questions is she does nothing special except loving selflessly. A mother is born when she gives birth to her child and from there on her journey from a normal one to a great one starts. Her everything starts with her child and ends with the child. She forgets everything while she puts her efforts to grow the baby up. In return, she gets expansion. She always stays in his child’s heart even if she is no more in the world. Mother is a fine example of “all love is expansion.”
“All selfishness is contraction” this statement would never be wrong if we compare it with human beings nowadays. There is no doubt that we are living in the best time as per technology and comforts we have but at the same time we have been so selfish that we have used every natural resources in excess resultant we have left very less pure water to drink, we have no fresh air to breathe in, we have no sufficient food. People are dying due to many health problems that are created by all of us. We have cut so many trees and to be more advanced we have upended almost everything we should never have. Most of the people are depressed and have no peace of mind only because of being selfish.
To feel truly contented Swami Ji says”the great secret of true success, of true happiness, is this: the man or woman who asks for no return, the perfectly unselfish person, is the most successful. ”
By all counts, and with proven results, we can say that “all love is expansion, all selfishness is contraction” is a very meaningful and inspiring quote given by Swami Vikekanand and if we mean it we’ll always feel contented, happy and peaceful.
